Background:
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) is hosting their 37th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) September 26-29, 2007. The ALC is considered to be the premier conference on public policy issues. The ALC provides a platform for the 42 African American Members of Congress to share the progress of their work on legislative items, and also provide an opportunity for their constituents to share their most critical policy concerns with the respective Members.
Every year, the ALC also has a track for Emerging Leaders with two emerging leaders selected by each CBC member to attend the ALC weekend to expand their networks. Participants selected for this opportunity often leave the Conference without establishing meaningful connections that could assist them in becoming stronger leaders or fortifying their ability to become a part of a progressive agenda that is shared by a nationwide collective. Preview is designed to bring not only those young leaders but others from all over the country, together in one location to discuss how they can begin to make change in their respective communities through building an effective network.
The inaugural Preview event last year was a tremendous success and was well received by all. Preview was attended by well over 300 guests to the invitation only event, with most being in our target age range of 21-40. The emerging leaders in attendance included numerous elected officials from around the country. Last year’s honorary co-chairs were Senator Barack Obama, Tallahassee City Commissioner Andrew Gillum and Truth Is Power C.E.O Jeff Johnson. Several veteran African American officials and leaders were also in attendance such as Congressmen G.K. Butterfield and William “Lacy” Clay, as well as Marc Morial (President, National Urban League) and Gary Flowers (Executive Director, Black Leadership Forum).
Details:
Preview will took place on Thursday, September 27, 2007 and it was again a smash hit!
Objective:
The purpose of the reception is to honor young elected officials for their commitment to important causes and service to their various communities; to applaud young candidates and entrepreneurs for their courage to try to make a difference; and to encourage emerging leaders to continue on their journey in whatever field they may be interested in pursuing. The reception is designed to accomplish the following:
Award IMPACT’s 2007 Emerging Leaders nominees
Provide networking opportunities with Members of Congress
Provide the same for State and local elected officials
Establish contact with progressive political candidates from across the U.S.
Provide greater interaction for ALC Emerging Leaders and other professionals
Target Audience:
Our primary target audience for this event is 21-40 year old college graduates. Our secondary target audience includes all leaders under the age of 50, including but not limited to the members of the Young Elected Officials Network, participants in CBCF Emerging Leaders track, candidates seeking public office, and other civic and community based organizations. Most of our audience has completed post-graduate work and is involved in a professional career in a major U.S. city.
We will achieve effective market penetration through our continued relationships with other national graduate and professional organizations such as the NBA, NBLSA, SNMA, SBSLC, ABA, and CBA.
